Man. In. Suit.

One of the more interesting aspects of Pacific Rim – and let’s be honest, there weren’t many – was the assertion from Guillermo del Toro that the monster designs for his movie could be created as suits for a person to wear. This was not some clever marketing ploy from “the Powers that be” to enhance any potential tie-in merchandise, but a clear nod to the Kaiju movies that pervaded Japanese cinema from the 1950’s onwards and became the de rigueur cult mine for some future filmmakers – del Toro clearly being one.

That brings us to the latest iteration of the Grand-Daddy of them all. 1954 saw the release of the first of these “Man in Suit” films, Godzilla. What better way to wreak mayhem and devastation on a city for celluloid than to dress a man in a monster suit, build a scale model of said city and shout “Action!”? While Roland Emmerich’s 1998 misstep dented the mythos of Gojira, this first full trailer from the director that brought us the wonderful Monsters shows that Gareth Edwards may be going some way towards smoothing out those dents.

And if that weren’t enough, this latest poster further enhances the cache of this May 2014 release.

Godzilla v4

There’s no real bombast here. Just an intelligently thought out ad campaign – so far – to whet the appetite. This is the kind of poster that I would be quite happy to see hanging on my wall. I hope you find the trailer and poster of interest. Thank you for reading 🙂
