There is no denying the talent that Tyler Stout has when it comes to illustration. Just gaze upon his latest creation for Shaun of the Dead for affirmation! The rifle at the top of the frame, the cornetto, the Jag, the silhouette of the guy in the wedding outfit; the attention to detail is fantastic. And that’s even before we get to the beer glasses creating a slight distortion to the titular title – simply sublime!
But let’s talk about the elephant in the room. I’ve scoured the image I’ve got for this art and can come to only one conclusion – I’m disappointed. Disappointed because we are treated to a fantastic rendition of all the principals except Penelope Wilton; and if she’s in there please point her out to me because I can’t see her. For those of you who haven’t seen Shaun… Wilton plays Shaun’s mum Barbara and in my mind is an integral part of the narrative. Is this an error on Tyler Stout’s part or is there some sort of legal reason why we have not been treated to a Tyler Stout interpretation of Barbara in the poster? The latter would be understandable and I’d be satisfied as to her omission. But the former…well…here’s hoping it’s the latter.
Anyway, poster as art. These are a fine example.
