No, it’s not a line from the film, I’m just trying to create a catchy title for my latest post.
Prior to my current spate of cinema outings related to this new blog, I hadn’t really seen much at the flix this year – economic times and all that! So I wanted to put what I’m about to say next into context. I’m sure I may have missed some “important” release (although one doesn’t readily spring to mind) in the early months of 2013, but despite that, The World’s End is by far and away the most enjoyable film I’ve seen this year.
But first, please hold the line, dear reader. Normal service will be resumed shortly…
There’s a really interesting article written by Robbie Collins and posted today in the Daily Telegraph’s Culture section. I mention this as, while totally unrelated, it got me thinking about this post and my blog in general. “When people define your movie as being good or bad, it’s almost ludicrous. Art is not about good or bad. It’s about experience.” This is a quote from Nicolas Winding Refn in the aforementioned article and I appreciate that most people would say it’s something of a stretch to consider The World’s End as art. That may well be true (although the “Cinema as Art” debate will roll on ad infinitum), but the essence of what Refn stated cannot be denied.
I’m sure if you want to reread my previous posts, there will be examples of films I have viewed and their subsequent posts stating that it’s good or indifferent (I haven’t, thankfully, seen a bad movie so far this year). And in hindsight, when considering Refn’s view, this is not a good thing – I’m not taking his point as holy scripture or anything, I just think he’s right. This blog is about my musings on movies I’ve consumed. I’ll tell you if I like it and I’ll tell you if I think it’s important enough to go and see it. But I’ve decided that I won’t “review” it. As I’ve said before, there are far better websites and publications out there for that kind of thing.

Shaun of the Dead. Hot Fuzz. The World’s End – The Cornetto Trilogy. What a fitting end to a fine triumvirate of films that have looked to pay homage to and at the same time subvert the genres they hail; the glorious denouement of The World’s End being a fantastic example. I’ve never seen Nick Frost in finer form, while Simon Pegg plays the dick-head wannabe living in the past with panache. It’s a luscious cast of Cornetto alumni and newcomers expertly orchestrated by Edgar Wright. It is a film that can be watched and re-watched, allowing the viewer to bask in the minutiae and take even more from the experience.
I’ve been looking forward to The World’s End for many a month and have not been left disappointed. The narrative is delicious enough to suck you in from the outset; from character introduction to character development, there are no two-dimensional inserts within the movie to instigate narrative progression. We’re buckled up and along for the ride. Add to that a killer soundtrack and, Ladies and Gentlemen, we have the total package. Special mention must also go to Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan and Rosamund Pike who all contribute significantly to the whole. Their individual bodies of work are certainly nothing to be sniffed at, so to see them sharing the same screen is an absolute delight and we are treated to a fantastic ensemble who are clearly having a ball! Please go and see The World’s End, if you haven’t already. I’m sure many a person will be clamouring for more from this creative team but, quite frankly, where could they go from here? “Sorry luv, we’re all out of Cornettos!”
